Hitler escaped to Antarctica

Conspiracy

Evidence status

Contradicted by historical research

The cited submarine movements do not establish such an Antarctic escape.

Editorial assessment of this proposition; not a numeric confidence score.

Claim or proposition being examined

Hitler survived Berlin and reached Antarctica by submarine.

Limitations

Documentation establishes historical circulation of the claim, not its truth; see counterevidence and source roles.

Scope of catalog verification

Source existence and described claim checked via web search/excerpts; not independent validation of alleged event.

Catalog review date reported: 2026-10-28. This is inherited catalog metadata, not a new verification of the linked source.

Wohlthat Massif, historical expedition report Plate 1

Historical expedition context—not evidence of Hitler’s escape. Plate 1 of the German Antarctic Expedition 1938–39 report shows the central Wohlthat Massif from north-northwest, catalogued at 71°12′ S, 13°23′ E. Published in 1942; the individual exposure date and flight are not supplied for this plate. It documents expedition aerial photography, not a postwar refuge.

Ritscher, Alfred (1942): Selected airphotos from DAE presented on 57 plates in the cruise report. PANGAEA, doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.896202. Original photographs: Archive of German Polar Research (AGPR), Alfred Wegener Institute. CC BY 4.0. Individual camera operator is not identified in the dataset; Ritscher is the cited dataset/report author, not asserted photographer.

No source supports associating the depicted location with Hitler, a shrine or a UFO facility. Coordinates are retained as catalogued and should not be treated as precise aircraft/exposure positions. These historical landscape names do not identify alleged secret sites.

Image rights and evidence limits

CC BY 4.0, explicitly assigned to individual PANGAEA datasets 896262 and 896202. PANGAEA Terms §5.2 includes images as research contents; §6.2 distinguishes CC 0 metadata from CC BY data. Its Binary Objects guide says images are archived as linked files, matching these hosted image-data rows. Thus this is the data-image licence, not a metadata-only licence. Parent publication series 896264 is separately CC BY-NC-SA 4.0; these images are reproduced under the more specific individual dataset licences and does not clear other series materials or the whole report.

Image existence does not prove a linked claim. Consult image-specific captions and reuse conditions.
