Polynesian peoples originated in Antarctica

alternative prehistory

Evidence status

Unsupported historical hypothesis

Genetic studies trace Polynesian ancestry through Asian and Oceanian populations; a book’s interpretation of myths is not archaeological evidence of an Antarctic homeland.

Editorial assessment of this proposition; not a numeric confidence score.

Claim or proposition being examined

Robert Argod’s Out of Antarctica proposes an Antarctic ancestral homeland for Polynesian peoples, interpreting migration myths and maritime knowledge.

Limitations

Opposite migration direction from the separate claim that Polynesian navigators reached Antarctica; do not describe this modern hypothesis as an established Indigenous tradition.

Pacific population study sampling locations — Friedlaender et al. (2008), Figure 1

Scientific context, not a picture of Argod’s claim: locations sampled in a 2008 Pacific population-genetics study. Panel A locates the global comparison groups; panel B locates Pacific samples. This is a sampling map, not a migration route or evidence of an Antarctic homeland.

Context from a separate open-access study, not the Argod book cover or the previously cited restricted Nature 2016 figure. Sampling is uneven and reflects this 2008 study; it is not a comprehensive account of present-day Pacific genetic research or a test that alone proves or disproves an Antarctic origin. Retain the distinction between a modern hypothesis and Indigenous traditions. Book-cover and Nature-figure rights holds remain.
