Captain Oates — different full-length portrait

Ponting’s published full-length portrait of Captain Lawrence Oates. Same named person as the catalogued Oates photograph, but not the seated sweater exposure in SPRI p2005/5/1403.

Herbert G. Ponting, The Great White South (New York: R. M. McBride & Co., 1922). Library of Congress scan via Internet Archive. Public domain.

This is a different published exposure, not the catalogued SPRI photograph. The target photograph’s exact date is not established for this alternate. The SPRI image is linked separately and not reproduced. Plate facing printed p. 284; upper-left portrait. Full supporting plate also depicts Edgar Evans, Edward Wilson and Henry Bowers.

Image rights and evidence limits

Public domain. Library of Congress item 23026514 explicitly states this digitized book is free to use and reuse; matching Internet Archive metadata identifies the LOC scan and reports no known copyright restrictions. The selected photographs were published in 1922; photographer Herbert G. Ponting died in 1935. This clearance applies to the independent historical book scan, not to SPRI digitizations.

Image existence does not prove a linked claim. Consult image-specific captions and reuse conditions.

Sources and what they support
